On this page you will find an overview of all 13 schools that we have been working on for a period of 2 years. In total 30 classrooms have been renovated and we have constructed 53 completely new classrooms. Per school we first show the sad situation of before and then we show what we have built instead. Below that some pictures are shown of the Animal and Agricultural Centre.
All schools have been executed in collaboration with our regular partner SEED Foundation. The chairman Damodar Bhakta Thapa has developed himself in two years into a fully capable engineer. He truly understands the earthquake resistant construction principles and he is able to continue the work independently. To us that is the most important achievement of our presence in Nepal!
The schools in Bhirchowk, Thumki, Phalangkot en Syastri are co-financed by our Dutch partner Impulsis. The schools in Deurali, Mahjibesi, Makaikhola, Gahate, Mugri en Mugribesi are fully financed by the Nepalese organization Child Welfare Scheme from Pokhara. And the school in Kalikastan is executed and financed by World Vision from Pokhara, for whom we have arranged the technical support. All mentioned figures include the costs of masonry training that we always give before we start constructing the schools.

Animal and Agricultural Centre in Khudi, Nepal (2009)
This centre was started in 1988 and offers veterinary and agricultural services. It is centrally located in the plain area and therefore easy accessible for the farmers that live in the surrounding hills. Every day about 50 to 60 people visit the centre and on a yearly basis more than 35.000 treatments take place. In total about 150.000 households can profit from the services, which are free of cost! Because the old building was too small and in a bad state, a new Animal and Agricultural Centre has been built. We have executed the project with our partner SEED Foundation and it is co-financed by the Dutch organization Hivos. In total the project costs were 29.412 euro, which was partially financed by the Centre itself, by the Department of Livestock and Agriculture in Nepal and the remaining amount by Smart Shelter Foundation and Hivos.

Het project
The Centre has two departments. At the animal centre people can bring their cattle for examination, insemination and castration. At the Agricultural centre people can get training in growing of crops, and about dairy, beekeeping, and fishery. The old centre is way too small for the current demand and the roof has been damaged during a hail storm in 2006. Soon after that they have started with the construction of a new centre, but sufficient finance was lacking from the start. Smart Shelter Foundation agreed to help them finish the building, but only if the construction meets the appropriate earthquake resistant measures. The new design consists of a training hall, 2 offices and 6 working spaces.
The old building cannot cope anymore with the growing demand for animal treatments and trainings. |
In 2006 the construction of a new foundation was started, but then the centre run into financial problems. Before we continued with this building, we have repaired and reinforced this foundation, up to the necessary earth quake resistant standards. |
We have decided to cast an extra beam over the inferior one. And this time with the correct steel reinforcements. Also we have removed and replaced all steelwork in the columns. |
After casting of the columns the masons have started their work on the walls. The outside surface is nicely covered with natural stone. |
After completion of the masonry it is time for casting in the roof. We have put extra steel in the roof beams, to make the building more resistant to earthquakes. |
The building is ready for plastering and painting. |
Inside the painters are almost ready with the finishing of the walls. |
In april 2009 the new building has officially been opened. |
